The Offering (painting on left)
This painting is about a young man that seeks his vision and as he goes through the fasting and praying the Eagle comes to him in a dream. According to native lore the eagle then becomes his helper, protector throughout the rest of his life.
The young man has built an alter of stone and has placed his buffalo horn spoon which has a carved Eagle head on the handle upon the top. He also placed the Eagle bone whistle on the alter along with the feathers from the Eagle. The sweet sage at the bottom is spiritual and is meant to purify and protect. This has been done to show respect and honor to the Eagle.
Public & Guests Welcome!

Saturday, August 10th: Annual Kirwin Excursion
Gold was discovered at Kirwin, high on the Wood River in 1885. By 1894, the
Shoshone River Mining Co. formed and the first ore was shipped from Kirwin by
mule in 1897. Kirwin became well established, with 200 people and 38 buildings,
including boarding houses, a hotel, a sawmill, a post office, stores and houses,
but no cemetery, saloons or brothels. The gold and silver mined there was of low
quality. A miner was killed in a mine explosion in 1905. In 1907, a savage
snowstorm struck, dumping 50 to 100 feet of snow over more than eight days. An
avalanche swept down one of the mountains, killing three people. Kirwin
residents had to wait until the storm cleared to get word of the deaths to
Meeteetse. When the storm cleared and crews began clearing the roads, the people
of Kirwin left with what they could carry, leaving sheets on the beds and dishes
on the tables. Today, many buildings, remnants of buildings and pieces of mining
equipment remain, allowing the visitor a glimpse into the past. Meeteetse
Museums, Inc. sponsors an annual trip to Kirwin with speakers who talk about the
town, mining, people and the area. An Annual Kirwin Excursion is held on a
Saturday, in mid August. The trip is a full day. Participants should bring a
lunch and beverages for the day, warm clothes, walking shoes and a camera.
Again, four wheel drive or high clearance vehicle is required, and car pooling
is encouraged. Donations are accepted.

Saturday, August 31st: Meeteetse Absaroka Challenge
The Meeteetse Recreation District has a mountain race every year in the
Timber Creek area. This year’s race is set for Labor Day Weekend, Saturday,
September 1, 2012. There has been considerable excitement about this event and
the location the last eight years. The Meeteetse Absaroka Challenge has been
chosen to be part of the Trophy Series sponsored by Trail Runners Magazine. This
is a must attend event. There is races for all abilities, so be part of
something special. The 5k, 10k race will run up the Timber Creek jeep trail
which will be set up so the whole family will be able to participate. The 15k
mountain run is an extreme race and not for the faint of heart. It continues up
and around the mountain with a 2000' rise in altitude to around 9700', then
continues through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in all the Rocky
Mountains. It concludes with a descent down a 1000' mountain face. According to
local mountain running legend Fred Thomas and other participants from past
races, it is one of the most RADICAL FINISHES around with the makings of a
classic! For more information contact the Meeteetse Information Center at
307-868-2603. www.meeteetsewy.com meetrec@tctwest.net

Saturday, Aug 31st - Monday, Sept 2nd: Meeteetse 101st Annual Labor Day Celebration
Meeteetse has been celebrating the same 3 day event for 101 years. The event
started originally by Josh Dean with a steer roasting in a large pit and a time
for neighbors who may not have seen each other all summer to get together. Ranch
work left (and still does) little time to go visiting so it was reserved for
those times when at least most of the chores were done. The end of summer is one
of those times; the hay is in and it's not yet branding and sorting time. Over
Labor Day weekend, rodeos, street games, food and entertainment liven up this
small ranching community just 30 miles south of Cody. For additional information call the Meeteetse Visitor Information Center at
307-868-2454 or visit www.meeteetsewy.com. |
